School Bus Hero Talks About That Morning, Suspect May Be Charged As An Adult

Chris Joyner of the Jackson Clarion-Ledger tells us that the 14-year-old girl that brought a gun onto a Yazoo City, Mississippi school bus may be charged as an adult.

"Because the crime was committed with a gun and she is over 13, the Circuit Court has jurisdiction over her," Yazoo County DA James Powell said Wednesday.

School officials said they do not know what prompted the student to board the school bus this week with a pistol. The girl reportedly said she was bullied, but Assistant Superintendent Mickey Rivers said she did not approach her teachers about it. Rivers said the girl transferred to Yazoo County this year from a school in Durant.

"Every one of her teachers said she just sat in class and never talked to anybody," he said.

In investigating Tuesday's incident, Rivers said one of the girl's cousins said someone threw paper at her as she exited the bus Monday evening, but it did not appear to anger her. "Her cousin said she even turned around and grinned," he said.

Yazoo County Sheriff Tommy Vaughan said the girl is being held in the county youth detention center. She has not been identified because she's a juvenile. She has been charged with possession of a firearm on school property and 22 counts each of attempted aggravated assault and kidnapping.

Powell said what happens next with the girl will depend on recommendations from a Youth Court judge, the sheriff's department and the results of any mental evaluation she may have. Powell said he has not formed an opinion on the best way to approach the case.

"It's a terrible thing when you have to decide how to handle a 13 or 14-year-old threatening to kill someone," he said.

Now we start all the interviews of local football star Kaleb Eulls ((pictured, thanks Clarion-Ledger file)), the young man who wrestled the gun away from the 14-year-old suspect...
