AOL Fanhouse and ESPN.com are citing sources that South Florida head football coach Jim Leavitt has been fired.
AOL Fanhouse .com reports that USF president Judy Genshaft informed Leavitt that he would not be back.
According to ESPN.com, a staff meeting has been scheduled for 12 noon where the coaching staff will be let go.
USF has been investigating allegations of Jim Leavitt mis-treating players and harming some psychically. Reports surfaced of Leavitt grabbing sophomore Joel Miller by the throat and hitting the walk-on twice in the face at halftime of the Louisville game back on November 21.
As far as candidates that could replace Leavitt, OSG Sports is hearing Tommy Tuberville, who has contacts in the sunshine state, and former Iowa State head coach and current defensive line coach at Florida Dan McCarney. We have even seen Mike Leach's name being mentioned.
MyFoxTampa, through the AP, has talked to Leavitt and he confirms his dismissal... saying he was "disappointed" and the allegation was "absolutely false."
ABC-28's Tom Korun has the details...
