Are The Packers Desparate At QB? Greg Paulus Works Out For The Pack

You remember Greg Paulus. The fiery little reserve point guard for the Duke Blue Devils who got under the skin of the Duke haters. Well Paulus didn't play a down of college football yet he worked out for the Green Bay Packers last week on the Duke campus.

ProFootballTalk.com reported and a Duke spokesman confirmed that Paulus worked out for a Packers scout. He threw passes to All-ACC receiver Eron Riley who could go in the late rounds of the NFL draft.

Seriously Paulus has football skills in fact he has quarterback skills. As a high school senior Paulus was ranked by Scout.com as the 9th best quarterback in 2004 and was ranked ahead of Colt McCoy from Texas and Chase Daniel of Missouri.

Paulus could have played quarterback at Notre Dame or Miami but chose to play basketball at Duke.

The last time Paulus took a snap at quarterback was at the 2004 U.S. Army All-American game for which he started.

If the Packers do not draft or sign Paulus he does have a year of eligibility for football. It's doubtful he would suit up for David Cutcliff because Thaddius Lewis returns for his senior year as a 3-year starter and Sean Renfree, Lewis' back-up, was a top QB prospect Duke landed.

So the only option is for Paulus to go the Division II route and give it a go.

Those of us at the OSG HQ can't help but think is the NFL that desperate to find quarterback prospects that a back up point guard from the ACC that hasn't played the position in 4 years really on the radar screen.

UPDATE: Midnight EST Wednesday
((HT: WRAL-TV))
Foxsports.com is reporting that sources close to the situation place Paulus in Ann Arbor talking with Michigan head coach Rich Rodriguez about the possibility of suiting up for the Wolverines in 2009.

Paulus has one year of football eligibility and doesn't have to sit a year because it is a different sport.
