UNO Athletic Program's Future Up To Student Vote
((HT: WWL-TV))
A student vote to increase fees will likely determine whether the University of New Orleans will continue to field an athletic program after the current school year, according to correspondence from the school’s chancellor.
A letter from Chancellor Tim Ryan to students says that because of the state’s dire financial situation, there is no money in the UNO budget to fund athletics going forward.
“There are not many cuts left that will not be painful or compromise the basic mission of the University,” he said. “That (cutting athletics) is a drastic move that will have implications as to how the University is perceived by prospective students and prospective faculty members.”
Ryan said the Student Government Association passed a resolution to allow students to vote on whether or not to increase an athletic fee paid by students in an effort to save the program.
The vote, which will be held on April 28, 29 and 30, will determine the future of the athletics program, said Ryan.
The increase of $8 per credit hour would top out at $96 for full time students, per semester.
Ryan said if the vote is positive, he would take the proposed fee increase to the LSU Board of Supervisors for final approval.
