To no one's surprise, really, the family of University of Central Florida football player Ereck Plancher ((pictured, thanks orlando sentinel.com)) plans to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the school.
Paperwork was sent via registered letter from Plancher's counsel to the Board of Trustees and to Alex Sink, Chief Financial Officer for the Florida Department of Financial Services.
In the Orlando Sentinel piece from Iliana Limon the suit alleges;
"As a direct and proximate result of the University of Central Florida's negligence, Ereck Plancher collapsed and died. "Please be advised that Enock Plancher, as personal representative of the Estate of Ereck Plancher, intends to pursue all claims and damages entitled to the survivors and the Estate pursuant of to the Florida Wrongful Death Act."
Grant Heston, the spokesman for the University of Central Florida, gave the customary and anticipated non-responsive response...
"The health of our student-athletes is our top priority, and we provide superb medical care at UCF," Heston said. "Per university policy, we do not comment on matters that are in pending litigation."
The Plancher family cannot file suit against the state until either UCF denies the negligence charge or six months have passed. The family can be awarded or given any amount of money by the state, but any amount exceeding $200,000 has to be approved by the state legislature in Tallahassee.
The filing from the Planchers to the school is here
The Sentinel's Mike Bianchi doesn't think it will make it to court
And, guess what...? UCF Head Coach George O'Leary has ended an apparent boycott, and even talked to the Sentinel during the Golden Knights' Media Day and practices
