Oakland Athletics
Manager: Bob Geren (3rd season)
2008 Record – 75-86 (3rd in the AL West)
A’s fans, say hello to: Jason Giambi (1B), Matt Holliday (OF),
And say so long to: Huston Street (RP)
Oakland knows it limitations so they like them young and cheap but the A’s like to win too. Practicing cost cutting or cost containment last season for long term growth meant a loser on the field but the A’s shook the piggy bank for 2009 and had enough to bring back Jason Giambi and trade for Matt Holliday. With that duo joining Jack Cust and Eric Chavez in the middle of the line-up, the A’s might hammer like porn stars.
What To Like About The Athletics:
Spending Some Money: The usually frugal A’s traded for Matt Holliday who will make over $9 million this season but he should pay great dividends offensively.
Bringing Back Jason Giambi: If anyone ever represented the frat house atmosphere of the A’s back in the late 90’s and early 2000’s is was Jason Giambi. Giambi returns to the team he won an AL MVP award with in 2000. He will make $4 million this season and should thrive back on the bay.
We Are Scratching Our Head Over:
A’s Starting Pitching: Justin Duchscherer is the #1 starter but can’t seem to stay healthy. A hip injury ended his 2008 season, now his elbow is bothering him in spring training. Duchscherer’s may not be ready to open the season. That will be a big blow for a team whose rotation doesn’t intimidate on paper. Dana Eveland, Sean Gallagher and Dallas Breden make up the rest of the staff.
OSG Prediction: This is a team we really like. The A’s might have enough wood to make a playoff push or even challenge Anaheim for the top of the AL West. It all depends on the pitching and that will determine Oakland’s fate. This is a bandwagon the OSG posse is ready to jump on. We’ve always wanted to party with Jason Giambi.
