((HT: Washington Post/Tarik El-Bashir))

Rookie goaltender Simeon Varlamov rebounded from allowing a soft tying goal to making a highlight reel-worthy stick save, Tomas Fleischmann scored in the third period and the Capitals hung on for a 3-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals at Verizon Center.

Alex Ovechkin and Dave Steckel also tallied for the Caps, and Nicklas Backstrom added two assists for a total of nine in the postseason.
