According to reports on several fronts, it seems as though the Arena Football League will not be operating in 2009. No firm word if the shutdown would be permanent, but it seems like suspending operations for a season would make it tough to return.
((thanks for the logo AFL))
Here is a story on it from our friends with the Rocky Mountain News hereHowever the leagues website has a statement that says they still plan on putting on a 2009 season, though we suggest you read it carefully . Check out the release right here
Will Anyone Notice?
I'm sure that a few folks will notice if they don't play this season. I'm guessing that they are having similar financial issues that most American businesses are having right now. Add in the fact that Founder/Commisioner David Baker retired after the past season and you've got a mixture for chaos.
This league has been around for a long time. In fact its been about 20 years longer than most thought that it would. The indoor, 50+ yard game with walls has been a success in several moderate sized towns. Who knows, maybe they will return, but if they don't...it was a great run, enjoy the memories.
