Atlanta police say they anticipate issuing arrest warrants for the murder of boxer Vernon Forrest by week’s end, aided by clear surveillance footage and an abundance of tips from “America’s Most Wanted” viewers.
Police suspect the man who appears on the video, captured outside a southwest Atlanta apartment complex near where Forrest, 38, was shot multiple times in the back, has a previous criminal record.
Lt. Keith Meadows, commander of the APD’s homicide unit, stopped short of naming anyone a “person of interest.”
“We have a couple of names that we’ve identified,” he said. Investigators believe there may have been as many as four men involved in the July 25th slaying of the former welterweight champion.
“I think we’re getting close,” Meadows said.
And police are just beginning to sift through leads generated from a segment on Saturday’s “America’s Most Wanted,” which featured the Forrest murder.
“The response has been huge,” said “AMW” correspondent Angeline Hartmann. “Usually by Monday the calls start to die down, but not with this case.”
Forrest’s funeral, held Monday at a Lithonia megachurch ((pictured, thanks Yahoo!News/John Bazemore)), attracted more than 1,000 mourners, including four former boxing champions.
“Whatever it takes to get justice for you, legally ... we’ll get it done,” said his brother, Alfonso Forrest, fighting through tears. “I promise you. I promise you.”
Hartmann said Forrest’s fame has contributed to the high volume of calls but believes another factor is at play.
“This has pushed the community over the edge,” she said. “They’re just sick and tired of what’s been happening in Atlanta.”
