Tennessee HS Footballer Dies During Game

((HT: KnoxNews/Phipps, WVLT-TV))

Jake Logue, 18 was an all-conference defensive tackle and offensive lineman for Sullivan South Rebels. They were beating the West High School Rebels 21-0 on Friday night when West stormed down the field in the 3rd quarter and was getting ready to run a play on Fourth and Goal. Logue made contact with a West player at the start of the play. Then moments later, collapsed while chasing after the action.

“On the end of the play, on that play, Jake fell down,” said Stacy Carter, head coach of Sullivan South. “We don't know exactly what happened.”

A trainer immediately started performing CPR on Logue. Paramedics were later called to the scene and he was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center a little more than 10 minutes after he collapsed.

Logue died in the emergency room about an hour later. The Knoxville Fire Department confirmed later that night that Logue was in cardiac arrested when he was transported to the hospital.

Anthony Richardson, Sullivan South’s athletic director told Tri-Cities CBS-Affiliate WJHL that Logue had a history of heart murmur, but recently received the go ahead from his doctor to play his senior season. Because of medical privacy laws, the exact cause of death hasn’t been released.
