Forget Health Care, US Government Wants To Control College Football

The U.S. military is fighting two wars, unemployment is over 10 percent so what does the U.S. Congress want to do, force college football to end the BCS and go to a playoff format.

A House sub-committee passed a measure that would ban a championship game in the Football Bowl Subdivision unless their is a playoff involved. The measure passed by voice vote with only one audible no, that coming from Rep. John Barrow, D-Ga., who doesn't like the BCS system either.

"With all due respect, I really think we have more important things to spend our time on," Barrow was quoted by the Associated Press before the vote.

Rep. Joe Barton R-Tex. is the sponsor of the bill and says the BCS is unfair and will not change unless Congress intervenes. I'm thinking Rep. Barton is a TCU fan.

Of course this isn't sitting well with the BCS folks either. OSG Sports received this statement from Bill Hancock, Executive Director of the Bowl Championship Series:

“With all the serious matters facing our country, surely Congress has more important issues than spending taxpayer money to dictate how college football is played. The consensus among the presidents, athletics directors, coaches and faculty from the 120 major universities is that the current system is the best.”

Like or not, the BCS does its best to match-up the top two teams in college football for the national championship. It isn't perfect but its the system in place now and ESPN has paid a ton of money to keep the BCS in tact.

Why the U.S. Congress is involved is beyond me. Is it not enough they want to dictate your health care now Washington wants to tell you how college football will determine a champion. Please, leave it alone. Cut my taxes, compromise on health care and get a clue. Stay out of college football.
