Joe Barry Carroll lives and is suing an Atlanta restaurant..

((ht:ajc.com))

Those of us who followed NBA Basketball in the 1980's and aren't ashamed to show our age are familiar with the name Joe Barry Carroll.

Carroll, a 7-foot center out of Purdue was an All-Star center for years in the league playing for Golden State and a handful of other teams before retiring after the 1990-91 season. One of the smarter NBA players, Carroll had a plan and since his retirement has become a very successful investment banker in the Atlanta area.

Today comes word of an interesting story. It seems as though Carroll and an Atlanta lawyer friend were dining at an Atlanta area restaurant, The Tavern at Phipps back in 2006 when there was a curious incident that took place...curious enough that there is a federal lawsuit against the restaurant for violating civil rights public accommodation laws.

If true, it wouldn't be a total shock as the OSG is based in Atlanta and even those of us no longer are there spent a large chunk of our lives living in the sprawling metropolis. While calling itself the "Cradle of Civil Rights" there from time to time are isolated incidents that call that title into question. The flip side...and this is strictly an opinion...is that pretty much everything and we mean everything that is even remotely controversial in the city is always spun into an incident about race whether true or not.

We are not taking a position either way as to who is right in this story, that is for a court to decide. We are just simply pointing out that when it comes to Atlanta it would not be a surprise that practices like this exist.
