Metal Bat Ban Denied In Northern California

The governing body for high school sports in Northern California decided Monday that baseball players can keep using metal bats for the time being.

The North Coast Section of the California Interscholastic Federation, or the CIF, voted 37-12 to reject the proposal requiring wood bats during next month's playoffs.

Marin County sports officials requested the ban on aluminum bats in response to the near-fatal head injury suffered by Marin Catholic High School pitcher Gunnar Sandberg when he was hit by a line drive from a metal bat last month.

Section managers said they did not want to change rules midseason and that there was no evidence aluminum bats were more dangerous.

As a good sidenote, Sandberg has been released from Marin General Hospital and is recovering at a San Francisco medical facility.

He is expected to be released from there on May 3.
