If you aren't familiar with her, she was from Norway and arguably is the greatest women's marathon runner of all time.
She won 9. Yes, she won 9 New York Marathons beginning in 1978. She won the 1983 World Championship. She won a silver in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
Basically, she won almost every marathon you could think of.

Waitz last ran a marathon in 1992, running in the New York Marathon with Fred Lebow, the co-founder of that race.
