Chestnut Defends Eating Crown, Kobayashi Arrested

Joey Chestnut defended his Hot Dog Eating title for the 4th year in a row on Coney Island with a somewhat pedestrian 54 dogs, but the real story was the guy who didn't compete this year.

Kobayashi did not eat this year because he refused to sign a contract with Major League Eating- the sanctioning body for events like this one. On his blog, he said he wanted to be free to compete in contests sanctioned by other groups.

Wearing a black T-shirt that said "Free Kobi," he watched the event. But when the eating ended, he made it up the stage stairs.

When security tried to roust him, he grabbed a police barricade. Finally, they dragged him down the stairs and he was placed under arrest Sunday afternoon, charged with resisting arrest, trespass and obstructing governmental administration.

Here's the fun from Nathan's, thanks to our friends at the AP...
