SPHL Fight Gets Season Suspension Off Sucker Punch

((HT: SPHL/youtube))

The SPHL is, what a lot of us would consider, single-a hockey. There are a lot of fights and a lot of franchise shifts from season to season.

Knoxville Ice Bears defenseman Mark Van Vliet suffered a season-ending injury in a fight with Augusta RiverHawks forward Aaron McGill. Knoxville head coach Mike Craigen demanded the league suspend McGill for the rest of the season.

He is...

A statement from the Southern Professional Hockey League said that after a "full and thorough review," it was suspending McGill for the rest of the season and the playoffs.

The statement said McGill "sucker punched" Van Vliet.

"It wasn't just a regular fight. It came 10 seconds after the whistle," league president Jim Combs said Tuesday afternoon. "The linesman was holding the Knoxville player's arms down, and the Augusta player came in with a punch that shattered his jaw. That guy will be drinking out of a straw for the next four to six weeks now."

Here's the fight that prevented a commercial break...

Van Vliet was hospitalized after the game, had surgery Sunday morning, and will miss the rest of the season. David Segal got three games for his actions...

Ah, the minors...
