A Serbian court has sentenced a former Binghamton University basketball player to two years and three months in jail for beating a fellow student into a coma.
Miladin Kovacevic reached a plea bargain with the prosecution back in September. The sentencing on Monday followed the court's approval of the deal.
Kovacevic could start serving his sentence at any time. He has already spent three months behind bars in both the United States and Serbia, which means he has the remainder to serve in a Serbia detention facility.
He was charged in the United States with beating Bryan Steinhauer during a barroom brawl back in May 2008. Kovacevic jumped bail and fled to Serbia.
Kovacevic's case had strained U.S.-Serbia relations after Belgrade refused to hand him over... and that's putting it mildly...
The Serbs, in this case, were less than cooperative jackasses...
Here's Jeremy Schaap's initial quest to find Kovacevic...
Steinhauer has recovered over the past year and a half to the point where he's working and has forgiven Kovacevic for what he has done...
Steinhauer really shows what its like to move on. Now Kovacevic can sit and stew...
And he can stick it, as far as the HQ is concerned...
