Senior kicker Coy Sheppard was ready to show his support for breast cancer awareness during the Month of October just like everyone else...
But not like everyone else...
His 82-year-old grandmother, a breast cancer survivor, gave him a pair of pink cleats to wear on the field. Coy did so, but was kicked off the team for insubordination. His coaches at Mendenhall ((MS)) High School told him to take the shoes off and he refused.
Here's the original story, thanks to our friends at WLBT-TV in Jackson
Sheppard and his attorney, former Mississippi State Supreme Court Justice Oliver Diaz, decide to file the suit to challenge the school system. The larger issue was that Sheppard was taking football for credit toward graduation. When he was kicked off the team, that meant he was in danger of not graduating.
The suit was dropped after Mendenhall High agreed to reinstate Sheppard.
