The University of North Carolina-Greensboro is eliminating its wrestling program for financial reasons, saying the savings would be a little over $300,000 a year
Athletic director Kim Record says "painful decisions needed to be made."
The school is saying that the 2010-11 state budget no longer allows for out-of-state students on full athletic scholarships to be classified as "in-state students" for tuition purposes, resulting in a loss of $750,000 in scholarship funds.
As is the case in these situations, UNCG will honor the scholarships of the 23 wrestlers on the roster if they stay. Anyone who decides to transfer is eligible immediately according to NCAA rules. The contracts of head coach Jason Loukides and assistant Daren Burns will be honored through the end of the fiscal year.
Here's some highlights of UNCG defeating Davidson from this season...
