Meggett Found Guilty Of Rape Charge

((HT: WCBD-TV Charleston, SC))

A Charleston, South Carolina jury deliberated four hours before returning a guilty verdict on criminal sexual conduct and burglary charges against former NFL running back David Meggett.

Meggett's attorney Beattie Butler said in his closing arguments that the victim- a 21-year-old college student at the time- lied about being raped by Meggett in her dorm room in January of 2009. He said the attack never happened.

Butler also said the state presented insufficient evidence against Meggett. There was an instance during testimony that the arresting department said they had evidence against Meggett in regards to this particular case, but it disappeared in between the time of the alleged crime and the case making it to court.

Meggett's attorney argued the sex between the two was a repayment for debt. In addition to a 30-year sentence minus time served, the judge says Meggett will be placed on a sex offender registry
